Self-portrait Graffiti Photoshoot

This Self-portrait Graffiti Photoshoot was done inside of Batman Tower in Pattaya, Thailand.  Batman Tower is a six level abandoned disco, which was abandoned shortly after it opened.  This photoshoot was made for HDR processing.  This work coincided (completely by accident) with Meeting of Styles, an international graffiti artist event.

Meeting of Styles

One of my favorite hobbies is nude self-portrait photography in abandoned buildings.  I’ve done this all over the USA and am working on doing this all over the world.  So, I was very excited to discover this building on Nicky’s Gay Thailand prior to a recent visit to Pattaya.  I arrived very early so as to not draw much attention to myself.  Immediately I noticed something unusual – large light sources were set up around the building highlighting beautiful, brand new art throughout the building.  Still I proceeded to set up equipment, undress, and start shooting.

Within an hour or two people started to show up, but I kept to myself and the arrivals did not seem to be bothered much by a man in his underwear shooting photos of himself.  This is Thailand after all, and selfies are king!  When people started working on the art, I was excited to witness it first hand and started shooting them at work and talking to some of them.

Finally someone asked if I was here for the festival.  That is when I first got the details of Meeting of Styles, an international series of events organized by a network of graffiti artists and aficionados that began in Wiesbaden, Germany in 2002.  This was one hell of a coincidence, but a very good one.  I suggest reading about the organization and visiting one of their events.

High Dynamic Range

The images from this  Self-portrait Graffiti Photoshoot are HDR (high dynamic range) photos.  The process was to set up the tripod with bracketed settings turned on in my Nikon D-610.  For each image shown here, I actually shot 3 images of varying exposure.  The self-timer was used to capture them 1/3 of a second apart from each other.  It is necessary to remain very still as the final images are merged together to bring out the best tonality range and any movement will cause problems.  I merged them together using HDR Efex Pro 2, one of the (now free) Google Nik Collection tools.  After that I square cropped the images and further processed in Lightroom to render them the same size, add keywords, etc.

Male Model Bangkok

Though this was self-portrait work, I am available for commercial work on a paid basis for a variety of projects in Bangkok as well as internationally.  In addition, I am always interested in collaborative work on an unpaid basis depending on the project.  For either one, please get in touch with me via the booking form.
